I’m sure you already knew this, but a typical light 7-string set goes 10/13/17/26/36/46/56 (or 59). But whoever came up with those gauges was, to put it bluntly, wrong.
Major tension issues arise, especially with the 13 and the 46. If you’ve played one of these sets, you’ve probably noticed a drop in tension on those two strings, making them all floppy.
On our Stringjoy 10-60 set, we use a 13.5, 48, and 60 respectively for the 2nd, 6th, and 7th strings, to bring the tension of those strings up to match the strings around them.
The result is a more “tight” set, that’s more powerful, and stays in tune better. Who wouldn’t want that?
